Argentine Music: Juana Molina

On Tuesday, as we gorged on latkes, wine, and ice cream on the roof, Guy played a selection on his iPod from Juana Molina, an Argentina-born folk singer who's opened for Feist in the States but who's been famous in Latin America for over a decade.  In the late '80s/early '90s, she was the star of a kind of Argentine In Living Color sketch show, which she intended to help fund her music career.  To her surprise, apparently, the show was a super-success throughout South America---but because music was her passion, she quit the show anyway, a famous Argentine comedian, to try to make it as an indie/folk singer.  Her viewing public (except those underground indie types, which have their factions all over the globe) were unable to imagine the sketch show's goof as a serious musician and dismissed her for years, until she started touring internationally and her 2004 album was named one of the Top 10 of that year by The New York Times.  Here's a video.  Look her up.
