Scream 4: Wimpy Smurfs
Today when I was at Hoyts Victoria Gardens for a movie screening - we won't go into it here just yet, but if you follow me on Twitter then you know it was memorable(!!) - I couldn't help but notice this array of movie posters. I know some younger audiences like horror movies, but this is going a little bit too far, don't you think?

Ron Galella made a name for himself by taking photographs of celebrities when they didn’t want them to be taken. He is a paparazzo and, like the literal Italian translation for the word, he buzzes around his subjects like a mosquito. Leon Gast’s (When We Were Kings) documentary Smash His Camera charts the 80-year-old’s career, which has seen him taken to court by Jackie Onassis in 1972, get punched in the face by Marlon Brando in 1973 and exhibited in the New York City’s prestigious Museum of Modern Art in 2007. He’s a man that looks incredibly feeble, but once on a footpath with a celebrity he’s quick as a whip. His storage room is filled with boxes and boxes of photographs of every celebrity imaginable; there’s an entire box dedicated to photos of “Jackie Onassis with windswept hair”.
Smash His Camera has a very limited season at Melbourne's ACMI theatre, in Federation Square. They've been on a role lately with exclusive titles like this, White Material (season ending tomorrow) and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (which begins its season in a couple of weeks), yet again confirming that they are one of Melbourne's true treasures. But you knew that already, didn't you?

Seymour Butts
As I and a small group of other Melbourne critics stumbled out of 127 Hours yesterday morning at Hoyts Melbourne Central, we couldn't help but be lured towards the poster for Big Mommas: Life Father, Like Son.
What can I say, we were attracted like moths to one of those Mortein bug catching flames. Except this time the big, bright red light wasn't a deceptive trap to lure us mere moths into its toxic aroma, but was instead the disturbing sight of Martin Lawrence in drag (yet again). It too was emitting a toxic aroma, but one of an entirely different order. It wasn't too long, however, before someone - I'm going to say Tony Morris because it seems like the sort of thing he would pay attention to - noticed the similarity between the poster for Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son (I still can't quite fathom that I am typing that, but let's continue) and Gnomeo & Juliet (I still can't quite fathom that I am typing that, but let's continue). I took a photo as evidence, which I think is damning.

Damn!
Because, apparently, one butt crack joke just isn't enough that we needed two of them in such close proximity. And, just think, if that poster for Yogi Bear included the infamous original tagline of "good things come in bears" then that would have made it a trifecta of gags about butts. Thank heavens for small mercies.
As an aside - how awkward is that title? At first I thought it was merely a tagline, but no it's not. Looking at it now it feels more like a television episode title, which is a horrifying prospect since the thought of a Big Mommas sitcom is just too much too handle. End of aside.
